The Blizzard of 2010 in Donation Garden
The Donation Garden at Lake Highlands Community Garden is a 2,000 square foot garden dedicated solely to growing fresh, organic vegetables, herbs and fruits to be donated to hungry families in Dallas.
In our first harvest season, we donated 480 pounds of food to Family Gateway, an organization “providing transitional housing and comprehensive care to families with children experiencing homelessness.” Our fresh food helped provide two nutritious meals to each resident every day. In the upcoming harvest season, we will send our food to Operation Frontline, “a national nutrition education program promoting short and long-term solutions to hunger by mobilizing volunteer chefs and nutritionists to teach people the cooking and nutrition skills they need to make healthy food choices on a low-income budget.” In addition to bolstering the efforts of organizations that are already fighting hunger in our city, the garden provides wonderful opportunities for volunteers to participate in our mission, get some fresh air and sunshine, learn gardening skills and have fun with kids and friends. We welcome volunteers to join in! We work in the garden every Saturday morning. We gladly accept gifts of donated seeds, transplants, tools and supplies. Dallas Is Gardening, Inc which includes LHCG has applied for 501(c)(3) status and as an organization, we will be able to accept charitable financial donations.
